International Breakfestival Review

EVENT: International Breakfestival
Finals: L.A Breakers Vs. Killafornia
Winner: Killafornia
Tickets: $15

Break Festival had some killer battles with some of the worlds fiercest crews going head to head with the most memorable and controversial battle of the night in the finals between L.A Breakers and Killafornia which was narrowed down to a split decision. It took place at around 2:30 and the crews still came at each other with full energy. The battle came down to the tie breaker between Psycho and Ruen.
The tie breaking round was given to Killafornia.
Until breaking competitions have a standardized judging system, we will always arrive at split decisions and controversial votes with no basis to back them up. Once again, “Breakdance Magazine” calls for a standardized judging system that holds judges accountable and proper incentives for good judging.

The event took place in Pomona and started around 4pm, however the battles did not commence until 730pm due to a 5 hour lag between the prelims and the qualifier rounds, which were filled with a few performances and a freestyle dancing battle.
The final battle between LAB and Killa did not take place until around 2:30 am. Major props should be given to L.A Breakers and Killafornia for waiting it out, competing all night, ripping circles, and still having enough energy to come out hard and heated.

The fun behind International Break Festival is that each crew must include a popper and at the end of the battle the poppers are given a chance to battle each other. What makes this interesting and fun is how the bboys and poppers attempted to work together and build routines and commandos that include both popping and breaking. Much respect to the crews that managed this. Special guest popper Hassan (France) competed along side the LA Breakers and put on a great show. For some reason a vast majority of Cali’s best poppers did not attend the event. The poppers that did attend added an extraordinary element to the battles and to the dance scene in general. Much respect from the bboy community, there should be more events than include both sides working together. There should be more events and opportunities for both styles to mix as they did this night.

Except for the 5 hour lag between the battles it was an entertaining competition and Breakdance Magazine can’

t wait to see who battles at the next one.
